what is the reason for tightening the abdominol, or keeping it contracted during certain exercises? Also the gluteals.

stabilizing the spinal column to minimize uneven weight distribution on the disks...also provides a stable base from which all movements originate- hope this helps

It keeps you in proper posture. Also, strengthens the abs. Lastly, we exercise to be fit and healthy. The more muscle we engage in an exercise the benefit we get from that exercise.
